About A Gent From Bear Creek by Robert Ervin Howard
'A Gent From Bear Creek' is a story in the Breckinridge Elkins series about a cowboy in the wild west. Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. During his youth, his family moved between a variety of Texan boomtowns, and Howard – a bookish and somewhat introverted child – was steeped in the violent myths and legends of the Old South. At fifteen Howard began to read the pulp magazines of the day, and to write more seriously. The December 1922 issue of his high school newspaper featured two of his stories, 'Golden Hope Christmas' and 'West is West'. In 1924 he sold his first piece – a short caveman tale titled 'Spear and Fang' – for $16 to the not-yet-famous Weird Tales magazine. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Cimmerian, was a barbarian-turned-King during the Hyborian Age, a mythical period of some 12,000 years ago. Conan featured in seventeen Weird Tales stories between 1933 and 1936 which is why Howard is now regarded as having spawned the 'sword and sorcery' genre. The Conan stories have since been adapted many times, most famously in the series of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This is one of my all time favorite books. Maybe you have to be in the right frame of mind, but I find myself laughing out loud at some point everytime I read it, and the first time was over 25 years ago. Not that it was new, even back then... The point is, it's a book that you'll want to keep around, not just the current best-seller. I don't know about you, but there aren't too many books that have actually made me laugh. I keep loaning it out, and then I never get it back! I won't bore you - or spoil any parts of the book - by giving examples, but simply put: It's. Funny. As. Hell! I'll stop typing so you can get to ordering.ps

This is a pirated rip-off. The cover shows a well-known scholar of Robert E. Howard's work holding up a copy of the exceedingly rare first edition of A GENT FROM BEAR CREEK, and appears _without_ his permission, violating his right to control his own image. People this cheap and stupid ought not to be encouraged. There are better editions of this out there, please do not support those who are ethically challenged.
This is a very enjoyable set of stories; if you like tall tales and westerns, you'll love this book. Highly recommend!
Love REH...but thought I was getting the full Breckenridge Elkins stories, not just one short story.
hard to read, very predictable story lines
Excellent book. I love Robert E. Howard. The Bear Creek series really shows off his humorous side. Keep in mind that this is only one story, not the whole series.
Sucks that they try to pass off half a book as a whole book, the real thing is great but this is not nearly the whole thing, just a rip off of Howards work, and those who have not read the original may think they are getting what is advertised, but buyer beware, this is not the whole book but about half of it, don't buy this rip off, unless you like wasting money.
If you haven't read A Gent From Bear Creek, you've been deprived. One of the few books that has literally made me laugh out loud. It has been a favorite since I discovered it over 25 years ago, and will always be a member of my personal library - happy to be able to add it to my virtual collection, since the hard copies routinely grow legs.
